GREENVILLE, Pitt County — Update:
A 16-year-old male is behind bars facing an open count of murder for the shooting death of another teenager, according to the Greenville Police Department.
Authorities say officers found a person matching the description of the suspect on Deck Street who was taken in for questioning shortly after the shooting on Thursday. That suspect remains at the Pitt County Detention Center.
A spokesperson says authorities responded at approximately 11:55 a.m. Thursday to the 600 block of Glendale Drive for reports of gunfire where they located 17-year-old Keshawn Montrale Barrett suffering from multiple gunshots wounds. Keshawn later died after being transported to ECU Health Medical Center.
Greenville police say the suspect who was known to the victim, is not from the Greenville area. They say it is believed the two teenagers got into an argument leading up to the shooting. Due to the age of the suspect, his name is not being released at this time.
The department says this investigation is ongoing and ask anyone with information regarding this shooting to call Pitt-Greenville Crime Stoppers at 252-758-7777.
