EASTERN CAROLINA - A Hurricane Warning remains in effect for Eastern Carolina from Surf City northward to Duck.
According to the National Weather Center, the following counties are under the Hurricane Warning: Carteret, Craven, Dare (mainland and Outer Banks), Hyde (mainland and Outer Banks), Onslow and Pamlico.
Also included in the Hurricane Warning are the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds.
A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions (winds 74 mph and above) are expected somewhere within the warning area within the next 36 hours.
Meanwhile, a Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the following counties: Beaufort, Jones, Tyrrell and Washington.
Also included in the Tropical Storm Warning are the Pamlico and Pungo Rivers.
TRACKING ARTHUR: (From the National Weather Service) At 11 p.m. Wednesday, the center of Tropical Storm Arthur was located near latitude 30.6N, longitude 79.1W. This was about 380 miles southwest of Buxton, N.C., or about 320 miles south-southwest of Morehead City. Storm motion was north at 8 mph. Storm intensity was 70 mph.
SITUATION OVERVIEW: Tropical Storm Arthur is expected to move north and strengthen to a category 1 hurricane as it approaches coastal North Carolina late Thursday and pass along the coast Thursday night into Friday. Arthur will produce a variety of impacts including gusty winds. Heavy rainfall, coastal flooding and dangerous surf producing beach erosion, high surf and rip currents. Isolated tornadoes may also be a threat.
Storm total rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches with isolated amounts to 6 inches can be expected across eastern North Carolina. Moderate water level rises of 2 to 4 feet, locally up to 5 feet, above ground level can be expected for areas adjacent to the sounds and along the oceanfront beaches.
