MOREHEAD CITY, Carteret County - A freezing rain advisory has been set for three counties in Eastern North Carolina along with a good portion of counties west of our area.
The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City put the advisory into effect for Pitt, Greene and Martin counties that will be in effect from 9 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. on Saturday. Other areas of North Carolina, including parts of I-95 and west are also under advisory.
According to the NWS, cold air will remain trapped at the surface over the northern Coastal Plain counties. This will lead to the development of patchy light rain and drizzle by mid-evening.
Temperatures are expected to stay at or below freezing in these areas, which could results in elevated highways and bridges producing patches of black ice. There could also be spots of ice on other roads, too. Drivers are encouraged to use caution when driving in the affected areas.
Warm air is expected to move into the area overnight and temperatures are expected to be in the 60s on Saturday.
