EASTERN CAROLINA - It was a stellar Week 2 of High School Football in the ENC. 2 defending champs fall, the 50th Mullet Bucket, and Pitt County shows up big.
Our Blitz Premiere Matchup, put New Bern against the 3 time state champs Havelock. Mike Hughes again was the spark on offense with 16 rushes for 187 yards including an 80 yard game clinching touchdown. Havelock's 31 game winning streak is snapped as the Bears stun the Rams at home 25-21.
Meanwhile there were fireworks all across Pitt County. D-H Conley shuts out Ayden-Grifton 42-0 behind 100 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns from Myles Taylor. Holton Ahlers was 6/8, 110 yards and had a touchdown for the Vikings. Conley is now 2-0 on the year. Across town, J-H Rose came back to beat to beat Laney 2-0. And in Winterville, a missed extra point is the difference as South Central hangs on to beat West Craven 21-20. The Eagles are 0-2 on the year.
The other defending champs, James Kenan, falls at Wallace Rose-Hill 45-33. Ken Avent threw 4 touchdowns on the strength of 247 yards in the air. It's the end of a 17 game winning streak for the Tigers.
Southwest Onslow continues to roll, blanking South Lenoir 42-0. The Stallions first home game of the year is next week against Richlands. Meanwhile Northside-Jacksonville picks up win one of the year with a 21-7 victory over White Oak. The Monarchs travel to Jacksonville next week.
In the 50th annual Mullet Bucket, West Carteret shuts out East Carteret 28-0. The Patriots are 2-0 on the young season. And Pamlico rallies from a 7 point deficit for a 23-14 win over Lakewood. Cameron Moore caught 3 passes for 99 yards and returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the Hurricanes.
