GREENVILLE - East Carolina earned its first off-day of camp with a pair of team-themed sessions Monday at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
The Pirates conducted the two-hour morning workout in full pads before returning to shells for an additional pair of hours during the late afternoon.
The twin outings marked the second of three two-a-day practices scheduled during preseason camp. In all, ECU has six more workouts remaining, including Saturday's scrimmage, prior to the start of classes Aug. 21.
"I'm sure every coach is pleased with their camp, but it's grinding at this point," head coach Ruffin McNeill said. "I know today was a grind for our guys, so I think tomorrow will be a welcome relief and comes at a perfect time."
The morning session featured 16 minutes of skeleton drills and 25 minutes of team-on-team work that featured emphasis on third-and-short situations for both sides of the ball.
The Pirates' special teams squads, under the direction of first-year coordinator Kirk Doll, keyed on kickoff returns Monday while continuing to monitor positional battles in its kicking game - most notably at punter between juniors Brendan Rowland and Trent Tignor.
ECU lost three of its primary four contributors from a year ago as kicker Michael Barbour, punter Ben Ryan and deep snapper Will Smith all completed their eligibility.
Another phase of camp will come to a close Tuesday morning as the Pirates will check out of their preseason dorm rooms and move into their regular season lodging accommodations.
"I know they're looking forward to moving off-campus as we've had everyone in one unit or under one roof so to speak since the start of camp," McNeill said. "The break away from football and a day or rest will do all of us some good."
Following Tuesday's off-day, ECU will return to practice Wednesday morning.
