MOUNT OLIVE - Mount Olive is the No. 5 seed and will travel to Savannah, Ga., for the Southeast Regional of the 2013 NCAA Division II Softball Championship. The Trojans will face No. 4 seed Columbus State Friday at noon in the first round. The NCAA announced the tournament field Monday morning.
The Southeast Regional is divided into two four-team double-elimination tournaments. Mount Olive is in the half hosted by top-seeded Armstrong, which faces No. 8 seed Wingate. Second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne hosts the other four-team tournament.
The Trojans will play again Saturday at either 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., pending Friday's result. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday at noon.
Mount Olive (34-13) earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth after winning the 2013 Conference Carolinas Championship two weeks ago at Burlington, N.C. The Trojans won four straight elimination games before defeating North Greenville 5-3 in the title game.
The Trojans did not face Peach Belt Conference champion Columbus State (39-16) during the 2013 season, but did play Armstrong (36-7-1) and Wingate (32-20-1) this year. Mount Olive swept a doubleheader at Wingate and fell to Armstrong in extra innings.
The winners of the two four-team tournaments will face each other in a best two-out-of-three Super Regional May 17-18. The winner of the Southeast Super Regional will join the other seven super regional winners at the National Finals May 23-27 at Salem, Va.
