RALEIGH -

North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren says "there's hope" injured quarterback Brandon Mitchell could be ready to play next week against Syracuse.

Mitchell played three series in the opening win against Louisiana Tech before leaving with a broken bone in his left foot, which required surgery. Doeren said Monday the Arkansas graduate transfer's most recent X-ray "showed a lot of healing," enough that the doctors said Mitchell no longer needed crutches.

Doeren said Mitchell is doing conditioning work in a swimming pool but still needs clearance to return to practice.

Mitchell won the starting job by beating out Colorado State transfer Pete Thomas, who has started every game since. N.C. State travels to Wake Forest this week then hosts Syracuse on Oct. 12.
