Alex Ovechkin scored his second goal of the game in overtime. It was the third time in 11 games this season Winnipeg overcame a three-goal deficit in the third period to force overtime.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Nationals have exercised their $12 million option on left-hander Gio Gonzalez. Washington also said yesterday it had declined its $3 million option for reliever Yusmeiro Petit, who gets a $500,000 buyout. The 31-year-old Gonzalez was 11-11 with a 4.57 ERA this season, throwing 177 1/3 innings in 32 starts. He has won at least 10 games in each of his five seasons with the Nationals, including a high of 21 in 2012.
BOSTON (AP) — Researchers say they've found a traumatic brain disease in former Eagles and Patriots fullback Kevin Turner, who was the lead plaintiff in a concussion lawsuit against the NFL. The doctors announced the results of their study yesterday at a conference at Boston University. They say Turner developed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (ehn-sehf-uh-LAH'-puh-thee) over 25 years, playing from youth football up through the NFL.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Navy and Notre Dame are coming back to the Meadowlands in 2020. Officials at the U.S. Naval Academy and MetLife Stadium announced yesterday that the Midshipmen and Fighting Irish will play at the stadium in the shadow of New York City on September 5th, 2020.
