IRVING, Texas - The following is an ECU news release:
East Carolina junior third baseman Alex Fieldhouse has been selected as the Conference USA Hitter-of-the-Week, according to an announcement on Monday by league officials. The selection is the first of Fieldhouse's career and the initial league honor for a Pirate this season.
Last week, Fieldhouse hit .412 to lead the Pirates to split a doubleheader against N.C. State and a sweep of C-USA rival UTEP. She drove in a league-best nine runs, scored four more while also totaling four doubles and a home run. Five of her seven hits on the week went for extra bases and she also recorded five two-out RBI. Fieldhouse slugged .824 and posted an on-base percentage of .421 during the week's action. Additionally, she tallied 14 bases, went 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position and only struck out once in 17 at bats against the Wolfpack and the Miners.
In the opener against the Wolfpack, the Garden Grove, Calif., product produced two hits including both a home run and a double. Her home run in the third inning gave the Pirates a key insurance run in the 5-2 victory over N.C. State.
Fieldhouse tied her career-high with three hits and set a new personal-best with five RBI in the first game win against UTEP on Friday. Four of the five runs she drove in during the contest were two-out RBI. She followed that up with a single and an RBI in the second game victory over the Miners later that afternoon. Fieldhouse wrapped up her play in Texas with a double and two more runs driven-in against UTEP on Saturday.
Fieldhouse has recorded 29 RBI on the season to place second in the league. Her RBI total is one less than she had in her first two seasons combined. She is also tied for second in conference with 10 doubles and tied for third in the league with her 63 total bases.
She is the first ECU player tabbed as the C-USA Hitter-of-the-Week since just over a year ago when Jordan Lewis also was named C-USA Hitter-of-the Week on March 26.
Fieldhouse and the Pirates (13-21) return to the diamond on Wednesday for a one-day break from league play with a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader against UNC Wilmington (11-18). The programs have met 92 times with East Carolina holding a 78-14 advantage in the all-time series. Last year, the Pirates took both games of the doubleheader in Wilmington by scores of 10-2 and 7-1. ECU has won 14 of the last 15 meetings with the Seahawks dating back to the 2005 campaign.
