HUNTINGTON, WV - Cold shooting hampered the East Carolina women's basketball team Thursday night at Marshall as the Pirates fell to the Thundering Herd, 72-60, at the Cam Henderson Center.
Celeste Stewart was the Pirates' only double-figure scorer as she notched
13 points, two assists, two steals and one rebound in the game. The double-figure affair marked her 12th in 13 games. Ariana Jackson contributed nine points off the bench while adding five boards with one block. Britny Edwards led ECU (18-7, 8-4 C-USA) with eight rebounds, while recording as many points and one block. Kyani White led the squad with four assists and posted two points, a pair of rebounds, and two steals in the setback.
ECU was limited to just 33.8-percent shooting in the contest, while Marshall (9-16, 3-9 C-USA) shot 40-percent from the field. The Herd collected 12 points off of turnovers, while the Pirates had just four, despite forcing Marshall into 12 turnovers.
The Pirates struggled offensively in the first half as they were held to just 29.7-percent shooting from the field and were unable to sink a free throw. Marshall got the game started with a trey off the hands of Orlandria Williams and went from there as the Thundering Herd never allowed ECU to take the lead in the game.
In the first half, the Thundering Herd shot nearly 50-percent as they converted 14-of-29 field goals as Marshall took a 10-point advantage
(37-27) into the locker room.
Despite out-shooting the Thundering Herd 38.7-percent to 30.8-percent in the second half, ECU was never able to take a lead. The closest the Pirates came was within two (39-37) at 15:15 on a jumper from White. The Thundering Herd, however, quickly got back into control and led by as many as 14
(62-48) in the frame and went on to defeat the Pirates 72-60.
Marshall had four double-figure scorers in Erica Woods (15 points), Leandra King (15), Suporia Dickens (12), and Norrisha Victrum (12).
Chukwuka Ezeigbo led the Herd in rebounds with nine, while Dickens posted a team-best three assists.
