East Carolina junior Chase McDonald was named Conference USA Hitter-of-the-Week after his productive performances at the plate led the Pirates to a 3-1 week, including a C-USA series victory over first place Southern Miss over the weekend.
McDonald batted a team-best .500 (8-for-16) with two home runs, a double, six RBI, five runs scored and added three walks and a hit by pitch. In four games on the week, McDonald posted at least one hit, drove in at least one run and scored at least one run. He recorded three multi-hit and two multi-RBI games on the week.
The right-handed slugger from Greenville, N.C. set the tone for the Pirates comeback win against Southern Miss in game one of the series, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a pair of walks, while his two-run homer in the fourth started the Pirates four run frame where they never relinquished the lead. In game two, he collected two singles, a double, drove in a run, scored another and walked.
In the series finale, McDonald belted his league-leading eighth home run in the seventh inning to extend ECU's lead to 2-0. He then recorded his seventh career game-winning RBI in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off single that scored Jay Cannon for a 3-2 victory and the series win over the Golden Eagles. Defensively, he thwarted a pair of potential runs in game three, throwing a Southern Miss runner out at the plate in the first and second frames.
McDonald is the first Pirate hitter and fourth player to take home player-of-the-week honors this season following pitchers David Lucroy (Mar. 11), Jeff Hoffman (Apr. 1) and Drew Reynolds (Apr. 15).
The Pirates will be back in action on Friday, May 10 when they travel to Marshall for a three-game Conference USA series in Beckley, WVa. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. (ET).
