ECU hoops in NIT season tip off
The East Carolina men's basketball team has been paired up against Norfolk State in the First Round of the 2013 NIT Season Tip-Off as the field and bracket for the 29th annual tournament was announced on Tuesday by NIT selection committee chair C.M. Newton.
The Pirates, who are seeded seventh in the tournament, will open play in the East Regional at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium Monday, Nov. 18, against Spartans at 9:30 p.m. The ECU-NSU winner will play the winner of second-seeded Duke and UNC Asheville the next night. The first round losers will also meet in the consolation round following the winner's bracket game Tuesday night.
This will be second-straight season in which the Pirates and Spartans have met. ECU posted a 74-63 win in Greenville last year in the only previous meeting between the border state foes.
First and second-round doubleheaders will be played Nov. 18 and 19 on the campuses of the four highest-seeded teams -- Arizona, Duke, Alabama and Rutgers. The winners of the preliminary rounds advance to the semifinals at New York City's Madison Square Garden on Nov. 27. The consolation and championship games will be played Nov. 29.
The remaining teams will play third and fourth-round doubleheaders Nov. 25 and 26 on the campuses of the three highest remaining seeds. Participating teams will not play any team twice and the third and fourth-rounds will be assigned to the most geographically compatible site possible.
Other seeded teams include No. 5 Rhode Island, No. 6 Elon and No. 8 Drexel.
Additional first and second round sites and pairings are as follows:
" The West Regional, hosted by Arizona, has the Wildcats playing Fairleigh Dickinson and Rhode Island going up against Metro State.
" The South Regional, hosted by Alabama, has the Crimson Tide matching up with Stillman and Georgia State playing McNeese State.
" The North Regional, hosted by Rutgers, has the Scarlet Knights playing Canisius and Elon vs. Drexel.
