CFB roundup: OSU's Meyer reacts to incidents
Coach fields questions on Hyde, Roby
Speaking at the Big Ten Media Days on Wednesday in Chicago, Meyer dealt mostly with questions surrounding senior running back Carlos Hyde, who was suspended on Monday after an alleged altercation at a Columbus bar, and All-Big Ten cornerback Bradley Roby after he was arrested at a bar in Bloomington, Ind.
"I want to make sure our discipline is as hard or harder than anything out there," said Meyer, who is entering his second season at Ohio State after going undefeated in 2012.
In separate incidents earlier this summer, Meyer suspended freshman tight end Marcus Baugh and dismissed freshman Tim Gardner.
Hyde is considered a person of interest in an investigation of an assault against a woman, but a Yahoo! Sports report indicated that Hyde would not be charged.
Meyer suspended Hyde from all football activities and said he would review the case as facts become available from the case.
Roby faces preliminary charges in Monroe County, Ind., on battery resulting in bodily injury after he allegedly refused to leave a bar and was detained by bouncers.
---Arkansas-Pine Bluff linebacker Lydell Hartford Jr. died of a gunshot wound outside his home in Waggaman, La., on Tuesday.
Authorities indicated that the 20-year-old Hartford, a freshman walk-on, was shot in the neck by a 16-year-old friend who was playing with a gun that, according to the university, belonged to Hartford's mother.
The 16-year-old, whose identity was not released by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office because he is a juvenile, apparently fired a .38-caliber weapon that he thought was unloaded at the time while the two were sitting in a car in Hartford's driveway.
---Senior Purdue defensive lineman Brandon Taylor was projected as a starter on an inexperienced Boilermakers line this year.
During Wednesday's Big Ten media days, coach Darrell Hazell acknowledged that the defensive tackle was no longer on the team because of academics, CBSSports.com reported.
The Purdue media guide did not list Taylor the 2013 roster.
Last season, Taylor played in 10 games, making 11 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss and a half sack.
