The Cougars of Southwest Edgecombe trailed by 13 at the half but managed to rally and score with :11 left to beat East Duplin 30-26 to extend Coach Raymond Cobb's career.
East Duplin took the ball deep into Cougar territory in the third quarter leading 19-6 and on a fourth and short were stopped by the Cougar defense.
Southwest took the ball right back down the field and scored to make it a 5 point game 19-14.
The Panthers answered right back with a score set up by a long Dijon Poole run to the one yard lineto make it a 12 point game 26-14.
The Cougars would come right back and make it a four point game with a 2 point conversion for a 26-22 score.
East Duplin had a chance to ice the game with less than 4 minutes to go but they were stopped on fourth and 5 and the Cougars got the ball back with all 3 timeouts remaining.
A few big runs set up a fourth and short inside the 10 yard line with less than a minute to go.
Southwest Edgecombe got it and had a goal to go situation but the clock was working against them.
Coach Cobb called timeout with 14 seconds left to set up a game winner.
They called Gerald Hinton's number and he scored to give the cougars their first lead in the second half.
A two point conversion would make it a 4 point game and forced East Duplin to score a touchdown to win it.
With 5 seconds left the Panthers threw it to Poole who was tackled at midfield and started a celebration on the Cougar side of the field.
Southwest moves on and extends Coach Cobb's last season for at least one more week with a 30-26 victory.
Southwest will now travel to Bunn for round two.
Croatan 10 Northside-JAX 47
The monarchs had no problem dispatching the Cougars for a second time this season 47-10.
Northside will host North Pitt next week.
Topsail 27 North Pitt 48
The Panthers got a 90 yard touchdown from Cedric Razor and a solid game from Christoper Perry to defeat Topsail 48-27.
They will head to Jacksonville to face Northside for the second round.
First Flight 21 Kinston 48
The Vikings used some stingy defense to ground First Flight.
Anthony Pitts returned an interception for a touchdown and a sack fumble gave Kinston great field position.
Shedrick Pegram scored a touchdown in a 48-21 win.
Next up for the Vikings a road date with the Vikings of Tarboro.
Beddingfield 13 Tarboro 53
Javius Nixon and Tim Eaton hooked up for a 50 yard throw and catch to set up a Demonte Cherry touchdown.
Then Wes Beamon picked up a blocked punt and returned it for a score in a 53-13 blowout.
The Vikings host Kinston in round two.
Rosewood 34 Lejeune 20
Chad Collins had a rushing touchdown in a losing effort against Rosewood.
The Devilpups season ended after a 34-20 loss to Rosewood.
Gates County 7 Ayden-Grifton 57
Drew Turnage got the scoring started with a 54 yard TD scamper for the Chargers.
Felipe Ramirez added a field goal a little later to make it 10-7 Ayden-Grifton.
From there it was all Chargers as Brandon Larry led Ayden-Grifton to a 50 point win, 57-7, over Gates County.
Next up for the Chargers is a trip to the Corral and the Stallions of Southwest Onslow.
Camden County 12 Southwest Onslow 35
Shak Pershey had a touchdown run early in the game and J'veon Walker had a pick 6 in an easy win for the Stallions 35-12 over Camden County.
Southwest will host the Chargers of Ayden-Grifton next week in round two.
Dixon 0 Goldsboro 40
The Bulldogs season came to a sudden stop against the Cougars who are on a roll right now behind Rasheed Rawlings and Jamal Jones.
Goldsboro beats Dixon 40-0.
The Cougars will travel to Northampton for the second round.
DH Conley 33 Triton 0
The Vikings took out some anger on the Hawks in a 33-0 first round win.
Walker Cummings had a 15 yard touchdown run.
Davis Kirkpatrick had touchdown runs of 45 and 10 yards.
Bam Staton also got in on the scoring for the Vikings with a 7 yard run.
Coach Paschal and his squad will now get ready for 9-1 Cleveland on the road next week.
Pine Forest 7 New Bern 48
Josh Taylor had over 150 yards rushing in the first half that included a 63 yard touchdown scamper to pace the Bears in a 48-7 blowout of Pine Forest.
Cody Purdie added a couple of touchdowns on the ground in the victory.
The Bears will host Hoggard in the second round.
New Bern beat Hoggard 39-7 earlier in the year.
Currituck 0 Havelock 49
Derrell Scott became the all-time leading rusher in Havelock school history with a 53 yard touchdown run.
Pharoh Cooper and A J Coplon both returned punts for scores in an easy 49-0 win over Currituck.
The Rams will host Jacksonville next week.
Jacksonville 27 Rocky Mount 14
The Cardinals made the long trip to Rocky Mount and they weren't coming back without a win.
The Cardinal defense stood strong in the second half to defeat Rocky Mount 27-14.
Now Jacksonville's defense will be put to the test when the travel to Havelock for round two.
Jones Senior 7 Southeast Halifax 6
The 2-8 Trojans survived two power outages to defeat Southeast Halifax by a single point and advance to round two of the playoffs.
Jones Senior will travel to a 4-7 Rosewood squad that was able to defeat Lejeune on the road 34-20.
