WILSON, N.C. - Two golfers who helped introduce Barton College to the national stage in men's golf will join an all-conference women's volleyball player and a men's basketball standout from the 1970s as 2014 inductees into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.
The inductees are Richard Battle (class of 1977), Ben Bridgers (class of 2003), Courtney Faircloth (class of 2004) and Jenna Viscuse Hinton (class of 1995).
Battle was one of the school's top basketball players of the mid-1970s. He started every game over a four-year span for head coach Ben Pomeroy, collecting nearly 1,400 points and 600 rebounds. His finest season came as a junior, when he averaged 18.8 points and six boards per contest in earning all-conference and all-district acclaim. Battle is currently a senior credit manager at VF Corporation.
Bridgers led Barton to its first NCAA regional in men's golf as a freshman in 2000, beginning a streak of 14 straight appearances for the Bulldogs under head coach John Hackney. His senior year, he helped Barton reach the NCAA Division II National Tournament for the first time. He was named all-region once, all-conference twice and honorable mention all-conference once. Bridgers is currently director of golf at Pinehurst Resort.
Faircloth guided the Bulldogs to four straight NCAA regionals in men's golf and consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Faircloth was a two-time NCAA Division II All-American, a two-time NCAA Division II Scholar All-American, and a member of the All-Time All-CVAC Team. He held the school's single-season scoring average record for nearly a decade, and remains Barton's all-time leader in individual wins with seven. Faircloth is currently a private banking advisor with PNC Wealth Management.
Hinton helped the Bulldogs to a share of the Carolinas Conference regular-season title – Barton's first under head coach Wendee Saintsing – as a freshman in 1991, and produced back-to-back all-conference seasons while serving as team captain her junior and senior seasons. Hinton has spent the past 16 years coaching club, middle school, high school and collegiate teams. She currently serves at Triangle Volleyball Club, where she has helped several teams qualify for the USA Junior National Olympics.
The Barton College Bulldog Club and Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Banquet will be held on Friday, October 24 in the Kennedy Intramural and Recreation Center (KRIC), which adjoins Wilson Gymnasium on campus. A reception will be held at 6:45 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m.
