Week 2: Bears edge out Rams
Rivalry Week Produces Some Excitement
There was no question where the game of the week was going to be played.
No matter where you live, the Havelock-New Bern game was a must see.
Of course the rain kept a few from attending but those who did were treated to a game that lived up to the hype as the Bears beat the Rams 34-33.
Havelock got on the board first when Derrell Scott broke through the left side of the New Bern defense and hit paydirt 80 yards later.
New Bern would then go on a charge and score 28 unanswered points to take a 28-7 lead.
A 64 yard bubble screen would chip into that lead for Havelock as the teams went to the lockerroom with a 28-13 score.
Havelock was backed up against their endzone when Pharoh Cooper was picked off by Naquandre Hill who returned it for a touchdown to make it 34-13 New Bern.
At that point the game seemed to be over with Havelock having trouble throwing in the rain and New Bern content to let the clock tick down with each possession.
But the Rams found a groove by moving the ball around the backfield using Cooper, Scott, and London Duvall.
A Duvall touchdown cut the lead to 34-19.
Then Cooper used his ability to change directions by stopping and starting several times en route to a 15 yard touchdown run that would make it a 9 point game.
A two point conversion would make it 34-27.
New Bern would run some clock and punt the ball back to Havelock.
The Bears downed it on the 6 with 3:30 to go.
Havelock would gain some yards before committing penalties that would back them up to their own 11 yard line.
Then Cooper found A J Coplon for 69 yards that would get the ball down to the New Bern 20 yard line.
With less than a minute to go Cooper would cut his way through the New Bern D and score to give his team a chance to kick the extra point to force overtime.
The snap was fumbled and the kick blocked.
New Bern Would run it out to escape with a 34-33 win and improve to 2-0.
Havelock falls to 1-1 but the loss will not affect their post season hopes.
DH Conley at JH Rose
The battle of Greenville went to the boys on the southside tonight as Conley blowsout Rose 34-14.
Northside-JAX at West Craven
Dwayne Johnson rumbled through a hole on the right side of Monarchs’ offensive line and raced toward the end zone on the first play of the game.
Johnson ran for 155 yards and two touchdowns and defensive back Andy Davis had two interceptions, both leading to touchdowns, in the Monarchs’ 26-0 win over West Craven.
West Montgomery at North Lenoir
North Lenoir used a fake punt to catch the Warriors off guard and was able to run out the clock to get the 19-14 win.
Marsharee Troy had 8 carries for 81 yards.
James Kenan at Jones Senior
Jones Senior allows more than 400 yards on the ground in a losing effort.
Only producing 60 yards themselves, the Trojans will go back to the drawing board for answers before next weeks game.
James Kenan wins it 29 to 6.
