The East Carolina women’s basketball and women’s swimming squads have earned the Conference USA Sport Academic Award for the 2011-12 season, according to an announcement Monday by the league.
It is the first time the women’s basketball squad has garnered the accolade.
The C-USA Sport Academic Award is given to the team in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest GPA for the 2011-12 academic year.
Women’s basketball produced a 3.381 cumulative team GPA in 2011-12 with 11 of the squad’s 13 members earning C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll status. Additionally, Whitny Edwards, Ariana Jackson and Kyani White were awarded the league’s Academic Medal for maintaining at least a 3.75 average.
The women’s swimming team compiled a 3.573 cumulative GPA, ranking fourth in the nation among NCAA Division I programs behind Clemson (3.62), Alabama (3.62) and Northwestern (3.59). As a result, the Pirates were given Scholar All-America status by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
ECU had eleven of its student-athletes make the Chancellor's List with a 4.00 GPA during the spring semester and an additional nine earning a spot on the Dean's List with six more on the Honor Roll.
