Sharmontez Ferebee threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Phelps with 1:46 left to help Plymouth beat Murphy 20-15 in the Class 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship Saturday.
Ferebee was named the game's most valuable player after leading the Vikings (15-1) to their second NCHSAA championship and first since 2007. Ferebee threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
With Murphy (13-3) leading 15-14, Ferebee capped a five-play, 80-yard drive with his throw for the go-ahead score.
Murphy was in the state finals for the third straight year and ninth time overall, but the Bulldogs couldn't win a second straight championship. The Bulldogs put together an 11-play drive to reach the Plymouth 19-yard line after Phelps' touchdown, but Michael Curry's fourth-down pass for Bradley Puccio fell incomplete to end the game.
James Posey ran for two short second-quarter scores for Murphy.
