ECU Women's Basketball To Host 1st Place SMU Thursday Night
Pirates In A Tie For Second Place
The East Carolina women’s basketball team looks to get back on the winning track as it plays host to conference leader SMU on Thursday, February 14.
Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
The Pirates and Mustangs will meet for the 10th time in program history and SMU holds a slight edge in the all-time series, 5-4. Last season, the Mustangs defeated the Pirates, 68-44, in Dallas, Texas.
ECU was last victorious over SMU on February 17, 2011, in Greenville, N.C., when the Pirates held off the Mustangs, 77-70.
East Carolina owns a 16-6 overall record and a 6-3 conference mark.
The Pirates are looking to get back on the winning track after seeing their five-game win streak snapped at UAB last Sunday.
ECU owns an impressive 10-1 record at Minges Coliseum.
The Pirates’ only home loss came on November 17, 2012 against College of Charleston (72-62).
In C-USA, East Carolina owns the best winning percentage at home (.910) and has won nine straight contests at Minges.
ECU is averaging 64.5 points per game this season, while limiting their opponents to 54.5, for a scoring margin of +10.0.
The Pirate defense is forcing 21.9 turnovers per game, while collecting 12.6 steals per contest, which is good for 10th in the nation.
The Pirates have three double-figure scorers in Whitny Edwards (12.0 points per game), Celeste Stewart (11.0 ppg), and Britny Edwards (10.5 ppg).
Britny Edwards is also the squad’s rebounding leader as she has collected 196 boards to average 8.9 per contest.
She also leads the team in blocks with 29, along with a 50.3 shooting percentage.
Whitny Edwards has been consistent for the Pirates all season as she averages 6.5 rebounds per game, and has added 38 steals and 41 assists.
In addition to being the team’s second leading scorer, Stewart is the team leader in assists with 89.
The senior point guard has been a major contributer as she has also posted 64 rebounds and 33 steals.
Junior Kristine Mial has made an immediate impact since returning to the Pirates’ lineup after sitting out the first 10 games of the season due to an injury.
Since her return, she is averaging 9.6 points per game and has collected 32 rebounds and 14 steals.
Redshirt sophomore Kyani White has grabbed 52 steals to lead the Pirates and average 2.4 steals per game.
White has also added 6.0 points per game, 71 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per game.
SMU enters Minges Coliseum leading Conference USA with a perfect 9-0 league mark and an 18-4 overall record which is good enough for the Mustangs to be receiving votes in both the AP and USA Today Coaches Polls.
The Mustangs have won 10 straight games dating back to December 30, 2012, when their 10-game winning streak began with an 88-73 win over Harvard.
SMU is averaging 70.4 points per game and holding opponents to 59.9, for a scoring margin of +10.5, to lead the conference.
As a team, the Mustangs are shooting 40.3 percent from the field.
Junior guard Keena Mays has started in all 14 games she has played this season and leads the squad with 20.6 points per game.
She has also contributed 6.1 rebounds per game, 64 assists and 38 steals.
Senior Alisha Filmore is the Mustangs’ second leading scorer as she averages 12.1 points per game.
She also leads the team in steals with 51.
Akil Simpson is averaging 10.5 points per contest to go along with a team-best 7.9 rebounds per game.
Korina Baker has recorded a team-high 82 assists while adding 6.0 points per contest and 42 steals this season.
