GREENVILLE -

Kirstin Buchanan Burgess has been named assistant women's tennis coach at East Carolina University announced head coach Tom Morris on Wednesday.

"It is a great opportunity to have Kirstin a part of our program again," said Morris. "It was a wonderful experience to have her in our program as a player, and I'm elated that she will be joining our staff this year as our assistant coach. I'm very confident that with Kirstin's addition, our program will continue to improve.

"I'm very appreciative to our administration for moving this position from a graduate assistant to an assistant coach."

Burgess, a native of Benoni, South Africa, was a four-year letterman for the Pirates from 2003-06. She posted a career singles record of 60-48 and a doubles record of 77-31.

"I am very excited for the opportunity to come back as the assistant coach at my alma mater," Burgess said. "The four years I spent as a player for coach Morris were some of my best and I look forward to working with him and helping him take the tennis program to new heights.

"I can't wait to meet the girls and hit the courts in preparation for the upcoming season."

Burgess ended her collegiate career with a personal-best 17 singles victories during the 2005-06 season, including an 11-5 mark against dual meet competition. Paired with Gillie Bailey, Burgess posted a 15-4 record at No. 1 doubles. She helped the Pirates to a program-best 19 victories that year.
