Duke basketball coach gets extension
Duke University Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin White announced Friday the school has extended Blue Devil women’s basketball head coach Joanne P. McCallie’s contract through the 2018-19 campaign.
“I’m delighted that Duke University will be able to rely on the commitment of coach Joanne P. McCallie for years to come,” said Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead. “Joanne’s record of achievement with Duke women’s basketball is rivaled only by her superb leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes. Joanne’s continued role as head coach ensures that Duke women’s basketball lives up to our highest aspirations for athletics at Duke while being aligned with our fundamental university values.”
In six seasons at Duke, McCallie has guided the Blue Devils to a 174-35 overall record and four straight NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearances. McCallie owns an impressive 77-13 record in ACC play, including an ACC all-time best 85.6 winning percentage. Known as Coach P throughout the women’s basketball community, McCallie has earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in three of the last four years. She is the first NCAA Division I head coach to win a league championship and be named league coach of the year in four different conferences -- ACC, Big Ten, America East and North Atlantic.
“It is with great enthusiasm that Duke Athletics formally announces the extension of Coach Joanne P. McCallie’s contract through the 2018-19 season,” said White. “Joanne’s amazing track record of success – both on and off the basketball court – speaks for itself. With her extraordinary winning percentage, coupled with outstanding graduation rates and academic success, we are extremely proud to have an elite coach such as Joanne firmly established as the leader of the Duke women’s basketball program. To be sure, we are thrilled to announce this long-term extension to secure Joanne’s considerable talents at Duke University for the long term!”
McCallie is coming off leading Duke to its third ACC Tournament title over the last four years, while producing a 33-3 overall and 17-1 ACC mark. She now owns three 30-win seasons since the 2009-10 season. Coach P has registered at least a share of the ACC regular season title in each of the last four years, including outright titles the last two years. Duke’s 17 ACC victories in 2012-13 is a new league record.
“My family and I are just thrilled to extend our time in Durham and to represent Duke University, while working with such a great group of women and exceptional staff,” said McCallie. “Kevin White’s support, leadership and expertise are so appreciated. We are excited to be a part of Duke Athletics during this exciting time.”
Coach P is one of only two head coaches in Division I history to lead two different programs to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and is one of only three coaches to lead three different programs to the NCAA Tournament. Earlier this season, McCallie became the quickest female head coach to reach 150 wins at a school as she accomplished it in only 182 contests.
“Coach P is a great coach and is very passionate about everything she does,” commented Duke freshman Alexis Jones. “Her contract extension is a good thing because she brings in top recruits every year and her new extension will help recruiting in the future. I am excited about playing for her the next three years.”
Duke will return all five starters and 93.7 percent of its scoring in 2013-14, which includes its top seven scorers. All-America selections Chelsea Gray, Elizabeth Williams and Jones, along with All-ACC selections Tricia Liston and Haley Peters will be back for another season. Duke will also welcome the No. 2 ranked recruiting class in the nation next season with three McDonald’s All-America selections joining the squad – Rebecca Greenwell, Kendall Cooper, Oderah Chidom.
