JACKSONVILLE, ONSLOW COUNTY - A 72-year-old woman was scammed during Hurricane Arthur. The Jacksonville woman had her personal information stolen while she was staying at a hotel during the storm.
The morning after Hurricane Arthur, the 72-year-old woman, who wants to remain anonymous, got a phone call in her hotel room at the Hampton Inn & Estates in Jacksonville.
"It was kind of a soft ring, and I rolled over and kind of picked it up," she recalled.
According to the victim, the caller claimed she was the general manager of the hotel and said they were missing information from her reservation.
"She was just so believable," the victim said.
The victim said it had been very busy during check-in, so it seemed likely that there could have been a mistake.
The victim said the caller gave her a name and phone number for her own records. The victim then gave the caller her personal information, including her credit card number.
An hour later, she went down to the front desk.
"I asked for this particular person and they said, ‘We don't have anyone here by that name.' Well, I just could not believe it. I thought, ‘Oh no, what have I done?,'" the victim recalled.
She said her credit card information had already been used twice within that hour. It was used on Jpay.com, an inmate money transfer website, as well as on a car loan website, according to the victim.
The real hotel manager said they've received word that similar scams are happening at other hotels, the victim told NewsChannel 12.
The victim said she hopes this doesn't happen to anyone else.
"Do not ever give that information to anyone when they call you, because you do not know who you're talking with," the victim said.
