Woman rescues man from river
A woman rescued a man from the Neuse River Tuesday night.
It happened near the Spring Garden Boating Area in Craven County around 8:00.
Laurie Adams, 59, was riding her bike through the area when she said a group of teenagers approached her and said their friend was out in the water.
"They were screaming someone's drowning," Adams said. "All I could think of is he was going to drown because he kept going under and screaming and under and screaming."
Adams said she jumped in and swam to the man, who Adams said was an 18-year-old from Vanceboro.
"It was not a decision, it was just natural," she said. "I'm a good swimmer. I've been swimming ever since I was little."
The two were eventually rescued by a Township 9 rescue boat, Adams said.
Some people are calling Adams a hero for the rescue.
"I don't feel like a hero," she said. "I just felt like it was something I needed to do."
According to a navigation chart, portions of the Neuse River are as deep as 20 feet near the Spring Garden area.
