Woman leads law enforcement on a high speed chase according to police

TRENT WOODS, CRAVEN COUNTY - 37-year-old Rose Marie Burgess was arrested Friday night after leading several law enforcement agencies on a chase through multiple neighborhoods, according to Trent Woods Police Chief Tony Lee.

Resident John Taylor spoke to Burgess right before the police chase started on Country Club Road around 9 p.m. Friday.

"She seemed to be strung out on something. She was not normal," Taylor said.

Taylor said she drove away as soon as she saw a police car coming.

Chief Lee said Burgess drove into a nearby neighborhood. He said she drove through Canterbury Road and Wedgewood Drive. Residents living on these roads said she drove through people's front yards. A resident said she even ran over some of their Christmas lights.

A few minutes later, Burgess crossed Country Club Road again and drove onto Trent Shores Drive. Chief Lee said there were several law enforcement vehicles driving behind Burgess in pursuit.

The Chief said one of the officers suspects Burgess was smoking a crack pipe several times during the high-speed chase.

After Burgess allegedly drove through more front yards she pulled into a cul-de-sac on Allen Drive. Burgess allegedly drove onto a residents yard and turned around on their front lawn. Chief Lee said an officer tried stopping her by shooting at the suspect. The officer shot four rounds, which all hit the car, before Burgess drove off the lawn and out of the cul-de-sac, according to the Chief.

Investigators said police tried stopping Burgess with stop sticks near Steeple Chase Drive, but after hitting the stop sticks she popped her front tires, and still didn't stop.

Almost an hour later, Police said Burgess drove onto a dead end off Madison Avenue, and crashed into a ditch. She was arrested on scene.

As of Saturday night, Rose Marie Burgess was in the Craven County Jail on $200,000 bond. She is charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators said there are other charges pending. Chief Lee said this is not her first run in with the law.

Investigators said it's unclear why she ran away from police.
