A 62-year-old woman is found dead during an early morning home fire.  Neighbors say that woman is, Mildred Hawkins Heath, a grandmother and an age old friend to the area.

Beaufort County Fire Marshal, Curtis Avery, says the fire happened on Sunday around 3 a.m. on the 5600 block of Cherry Run Road in Washington.

Neighbor Barbara Chauncey says she knew Heath for a long time.

"We all went to bible school together and we all grew up together. It had to have been probably 50 or 55 years ago," Chauncey said.

When crews arrived the home was completely covered in flames, said Avery.

Chauncey says she ran over to Heath's home to find it fully engulfed.

“I was devastated, because I saw her son but I did not see Mildred," Chauncey said.

Investigators say the victim's son had just left the home, prior to the start of the fire.

When first responders entered the home, they found a woman dead inside. Details about what caused the woman's death have not been released at this time.

Chauncey said Heath was one of the finest people she ever knew.

“She was wonderful. You couldn't ask for anybody better," Chauncey said.

Officials believe there is no foul play involved at the time, and are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
