A Carteret County woman has been charged with child abuse after a toddler was scalded with hot water, causing second-degree burns.
According to the Morehead City Police Department, 22-year-old Julia Rose Catjakis was arrested on Saturday.
Police said the 2-year-old victim is the son of Catjakis' boyfriend. Catjakis was watching the toddler while the father was at work.
The father took the 2-year-old boy to Carteret General Hospital Friday after returning home from his job, investigators said. Police said they later learned that the toddler was scalded with hot water on his left hand.
The 2-year-old suffered second-degree burns and was transferred to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill, police said. The toddler remains at the burn center as of Tuesday afternoon, but is expected to be released by the end of the week, according to investigators.
Catjakis, of Morehead City, has been charged with intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. The suspect was released Monday night on a $50,000 bond.
