A man wanted for assault charges in Beaufort County was shot and killed by a deputy in South Carolina.
Investigators said 39-year-old Mitchell St. Clair Jr., of Washington, had another person's identification on him when he was shot and killed Monday night.
A Richland County, S.C., deputy pulled over St. Clair after learning the license plate on his car didn't match the vehicle's description, authorities said.
But St. Clair then ran from his vehicle and fired at the deputy chasing him, according to investigators. St. Clair was killed in the gunfight; the deputy was uninjured.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
St. Clair was wanted in Beaufort County for allegedly assaulting a woman and a juvenile in May 2012. Authorities said St. Clair had a long criminal history that included several drug charges.
