FORT BRAGG, CUMBERLAND COUNTY -

Companies who want to hire military veterans are zeroing in on the North Carolina Army post that's one of the largest and busiest military centers in the world.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and dozens of companies are meeting Wednesday at Fort Bragg with more than 1,000 soldiers and spouses getting ready to leave the Army.

It's part of a two-day event focusing on hiring initiatives to help soon-to-be veterans as the American military projects downsizing with the end of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The national unemployment rate for all veterans over 18 was 6 percent in July, slightly below the 6.2 percent jobless rate for all workers.
