Crews are investigating what caused a massive fire that extensively damaged a home and sent two firefighters to a hospital.
"There was an absolute wall of flames the whole garage door was melted away," Carol Rigle said. Rigle is a neighbor and witnessed the fire. "I was out here watching every second because of the proximity of my house to his."
According to Morehead City Fire-EMS, crews are at the residence on Meadow Drive in the Mandy Farms subdivision Thursday morning to determine the cause and origin of the blaze.
MHC Fire-EMS said they first responded to the fire at 6:36 p.m. Wednesday. When crews arrived, they saw a large amount of fire coming from the garage area of the two-story home.
Two firefighters --who had just left a wildfire that they had been working for two hours-- were taken to Carteret General Hospital, said MHC Fire-EMS. Both firefighters have since been released from the hospital and are recovering at home.
The fire spread to the living area of the home and caused extensive damage, according to MHC Fire-EMS. Crews worked for more than an hour to bring the fire under control.
Witnesses told MHC Fire-EMS that the resident of the home was out of town when the fire happened. No injuries were reported.
