Two children hospitalized, chain-reaction crash under investigation

CARTERET COUNTY - A four-car wreck in Newport Saturday left five people, including two children, hurt.

The crash happened around 9 a.m. at the intersection of Chatham St. and Merry Woods Dr., police said.

A Ford Explorer was stopped on Chatham, with a Chevy pickup truck was behind it, police said.

A GMC Sierra slammed into the Chevy, which then hit the Explorer, police said.

Investigators say April Thomas was driving the pickup that started it all.

The Explorer was forced into the opposing lane, hitting a Mazda Protégé.

The five people injured were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Speed appears to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The accident remains under investigation.

No charges have been filed.
