TRENT WOODS, CRAVEN COUNTY - Two separate black bear sightings were reported in Craven County Tuesday morning.
A resident saw a large black bear at about 7 a.m. on Wedgewood Drive in the Country Club Hills neighborhood in Trent Woods. That sighting happened just hours after a bear was spotted in downtown New Bern, police said.
According to officers, the bear was seen in the parking lot between the city hall and the tax office on the corner of Pollock and Craven Streets. Officers said the bear then traveled to a parking lot next to the federal courthouse on Broad Street, before going up Craven Street to Pollock Street.
A NewsChannel 12 crew last spotted the bear in a backyard on Hancock Street. Dispatchers said police left the bear alone to wander back into its natural habitat.
It's not clear if it was the same bear in both sightings.
