Family: Tow truck driver who died on the job 'truly missed'
Family members have identified the tow truck driver who suffered a heart attack and died while working a wreck during Tuesday's winter storm.
The victim is Troy Anderson, who was in his 60s, said his grandson, Michael.
"He loved his family very much. He'd do anything he could for you.," Michael said of Troy. "He's a great man and he's going to be truly missed."
According to Michael, Troy slipped and fell, then suffered a heart attack while working to tow a van that had ran into a ditch off Highway 43 in Craven County. The scene is a few miles from the Pitt County line. The accident happened at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, said first responders.
Troy later passed away, his family said. It's unclear if he died from the fall or from the heart attack.
Troy is the founder of Anderson & Sons Automotive & Towing in Greenville, said Michael. Troy retired a few years ago but was still working part-time. He got the call about the van wreck at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, his first tow call of the evening, said Michael.
"He loved to drive the tow truck. For his retirement, he'd come up here and offer help. Anytime we need him, he'd go out and do a call for us," Michael said, adding that his grandfather is the hardest worker he had even known.
Troy Anderson is survived by a large family, including his great-granddaughter, Hailey.
The driver of the van that wrecked was not injured, officials said. NewsChannel 12 is waiting to hear from the Highway Patrol on what caused the accident.
