EASTERN CAROLINA - A Tornado Watch has been extended into Friday night for much of Eastern Carolina as Tropical Storm Andrea continues to move along the East Coast.
A Tornado Watch means weather conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes. According to the National Weather Center, several tornadoes are likely, with wind gusts up to 70 m.p.h. possible.
The Tornado Watch will be in effect until 8 p.m. Friday for the following 15 counties: Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Dare, Duplin, Greene, Hyde, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Onslow, Pamlico, Pitt, Tyrrell and Washington Counties.
Earlier, a Tornado Warning was issued for Hyde and Dare Counties because an NWS doppler radar detected a tornado over Gull rock (8 miles southwest of Engelhard) at 8:02 a.m. The Tornado Warning has since expired.
Throughout early Friday, seven Tornado Warnings were issued within about five hours. Despite this, no damage was reported, other than possible downed trees in the Hubert area.
The NWS also issued a Flood Watch that will be in effect until Friday evening. According to the NWS, rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches are expected, with some localized heavier amounts possible. Low-lying areas and places with poor drainage are at the highest risk.
The following counties are under the Flood Watch: Beaufort County, Carteret County, Craven County, Dare County (Outer Banks), Duplin County, Greene County, Hyde County (Mainland & Outter Banks), Jones County, Lenoir County, Martin County, Onslow County, Pamlico County, Pitt County, Tyrrell County (Mainland), Washington County.
In addition, a Tropical Storm Warning was posted as of 5 a.m. Thursday for counties along and east of Highway 17: Beaufort, Craven, Onslow, Pamlico, Tyrrell, Jones and Washington.
The storm is expected quickly accelerate off to the Northeast by late Friday. The rain will quickly taper off.
Although the storm will depart by the beginning of this weekend, the tropical air will remain in place. That will give us a strong chance for scattered showers and storms for the rest of the weekend.
