Troopers identify pedestrian hit and killed in Craven County

CRAVEN COUNTY - The Highway Patrol has identified a pedestrian hit and killed by a vehicle in Craven County Wednesday night.

Frederick Patterson Jr., 49, of New Bern, was walking on the westbound lane of U.S. 70 at East Fisher Avenue, between New Bern and Havelock, troopers said. But at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, a 2003 Toyota hit Patterson, killing him, according to investigators.

Tony Patterson, Frederick Patterson's young brother, said he is still in shock.

"He was my big brother, I loved him so much. I don't know how I'm going to go on without him," he said.

Frederick said he believes his brother was walking home when he was hit.

"I don't care who was right or who was wrong, my brother was lost," he said.

Tony said him and his brother lived in a home together, just a few houses down from where the wreck happened. He said his brother was a family man with the biggest heart for the people in his community.

"He was a giving person. We got a couple of people in the neighborhood that don't have much. I mean he's just a good person," Tony said.

Patterson was wearing dark clothing, making him difficult to be seen, troopers said. As a result, the driver who hit the victim will not be charged.

Speed and alcohol were not factors, said investigators.
