The Highway Patrol said a man driving 100 mph was killed in a car wreck on the Fourth of July.
According to troopers, 32-year-old Kelsie Applewhite crashed near the Pitt-Edgecombe County line at about 11 p.m. on July 4.
Investigators said Applewhite was driving at about 100 mph when his car veered to the right off Conetoe Road --about 7 miles west of Bethel in Pitt County. The car then uprooted a tree and broke through a fence before crashing into a utility pole, troopers explained.
Witness Ben Harris said he ran outside his home that night as soon as he heard the loud crash.
"I saw the smoke from the vehicle in the air. I just went out there and got a little closer to the car to try to see if he was alright, but it was too late," Harris recalled.
Troopers said Applewhite died at the scene. In addition to speed, investigators said alcohol was a factor in that crash.
