JAMESVILLE, MARTIN COUNTY - Troopers with The Highway Patrol said a driver fell asleep at the wheel Tuesday night and crashed into a home, injuring three people.
The wreck happened just before midnight Tuesday at about 11:55 p.m., according to dispatchers.
The crash was reported on the 1300 block of Highway 171, just south of Jamesville in Martin County near the Beaufort County line.
Martin County officials said a woman from Chocowinity fell asleep at the wheel, went off the road, flipped then crashed into the front of the home. Troopers said the woman was driving around 85 mph.
"Everything was totaled. everything. it just looked like a tornado just went through our living room," Maria Watts, who lives at the home, said.
Watts, her husband and two young daughters were inside the home when the accident happened. She said she had just put her one-year-old daughter to bed.
"We could have been sitting on the couch," she said. "I hate to say it, but we could have been dead."
"I woke up to a loud sonic boom with a woman parked in my living room upside down," Michael Watts said.
The crash left a hole in the middle of the home, and damaged most of the family's belongings.
"My TV, my couch, my wedding pictures on the wall, sentimental stuff that you won't get back," Maria Watts said.
The home is a total loss. The Watts' said they will likely stay with family members until they can find a new home.
Michael and Maria Watts were sent to the hospital with minor injuries. One of their daughters was also injured.
The driver of the vehicle is charged with speeding and driving left of center.
Troopers say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
