Trooper: Speed a factor in fatal rollover wreck

VANCEBORO, CRAVEN COUNTY - One man is dead following a single car wreck in Craven County.

According to a spokesperson for the Highway Patrol, Brian Randal Kirby, 29, was traveling north on the 5200 block of Highway 17 in between Vanceboro and Bridgeton, when his 2001 Cadillac left the roadway. Troopers said the car went off the left side of the road, crossed two driveways before striking a utility pole and a concrete tile pile. The car overturned and Kirby was ejected from the car.

Homeowner, Ashley Speed said she woke up around six to a wrecker pulling Kirby's car from her yard.

"I was never expecting to see that, especially in my yard and how early it was. I feel for his family and I'm praying for them. He was too young," Speed said.

Friends said Kirby leaves behind two children.

"I feel bad for his kids. I really do... waking up without their dad you know? It's sad," Speed said.

Kirby was taken to the hospital but died from injuries sustained during the crash.

The crash happened in a front yard around 4:15 a.m. Saturday. The person who lives at that home said she awoke Saturday morning to a wrecker taking the car out of her yard.

Speeding and reckless driving are factors in the crash, according to troopers. It's estimated Kirby was going 75-85 mph according to troopers.

There were no passengers in the car and no one else was hurt in the crash.
