HAVELOCK, CRAVEN COUNTY - A 6-year-old boy lost his grandmother in a two-vehicle wreck that also killed another victim, investigators said. In addition, four other people, including the child, were injured.
According to the Highway Patrol, 50-year-old Klass Dohn and 21-year-old Jun Thang, both of New Bern, were killed in the accident at Highway 101 and Ferry Road, just outside of Havelock, at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Troopers said Thang was turning his Mazda left from Ferry Road onto Highway 101, heading towards Beaufort. But his car did not come to a complete stop at the intersection and turned in front of a truck, which t-boned the car on the driver's side, troopers said.
Thang and one of his passengers, Dohn, were killed at the scene, investigators told NewsChannel 12.
Four other passengers in the car were taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. According to troopers, they are Dah Ke, 6, Lian Mang, 34, Shi Lay, age unknown, and Sun Aye, age unknown. The 6-year-old boy is Dohn's grandchild, investigators said. Their conditions were not available Thursday afternoon.
According to family, all the victims are refugees from Myanmar. NewsChannel 12 talked with one of the sons of the woman killed.
"She brought us over here just to get a better life," said Ka Dohn. "She always supported us and told us what is right and what is wrong."
The truck driver, 49-year-old Micahel Biggs, of Raleigh, will not be charged, investigators said. Biggs and a passenger were not injured.
Alcohol was not involved, troopers added.
