CARTERET COUNTY - Three men, including a Cherry Point Marine, appeared in court Tuesday morning for a string of car break-ins in Carteret County.
According to investigators, 20-year-old Keith Richard Carlson, of Havelock, 20-year-old Marco Antonio Portalatin, of Havelock, and 22-year-old Bryon David Cooper, of MCAS Cherry Point, are charged in the case.
The trio allegedly broke into numerous vehicles in the Sea Gate subdivision, located on Highway 101 near the Core Creek Bridge in Carteret County. The crimes happened early Saturday morning, deputies said.
The suspects were captured because a homeowner called in about a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood, investigators said. When deputies arrived, they found the suspect's car and numerous stolen items next to it. The suspects themselves were not in the vehicle, but they were later spotted walking on Highway 11, deputies said.
Carlson and Portalatin were arrested, but Cooper ran off on foot, according to investigators. He later turned himself in to police.
Each suspect faces the following 15 charges: five counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, five counts of larceny, and five counts of possession of stolen goods. In addition, Cooper is charged with resist, obstruct and delay.
The suspects were jailed under $15,000 bonds each.
