Tragedy In Paradise For Craven County Twins

LENOIR & CRAVEN COUNTIES - A young New Bern man drowned in the Virgin Islands Friday, while swimming with his twin brother.

James Alexander, 24, (seen right in photo) attempted to dive to the bottom of Solomon Bay, but never came up alive. National Park Official Mike Anderson said Alexander "ended up on the bottom," a depth between 25 and 40 feet.

"They tried everything they could do," Anderson said. But C.P.R from a park lifeguard could not revive the man.

Alexander was free diving with his twin brother, David. Both graduated high school from Kinston's Parrott Academy in 2006. Assistant Headmaster Hugh Pollock said the school has been in shock since Friday.

"We just can't believe it's happened," Pollock said. "And we'd like to think we can just open up our eyes. It was just a nightmare."

James was actively involved in Parrott's varsity tennis and soccer teams. He and his brother David lived on the island of St. John after graduating from UNC Chapel Hill in 2010.

Monday morning dozens of friends and family packed the beach where James went to swim for the last time. A funeral service is planned for this weekend in New Bern.
