Tracking steam and storms in day ahead

EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA - There are two weather threats we need to alert you to for our Tuesday.

A Heat Advisory has been posted by the national Weather Service for all of Eastern Carolina from 11 am this morning to 6 pm this evening.

Heat Index values will range 105 to 109 degrees. Timing of the hottest temperatures are expected during the afternoon hours.

Here are some precautionary and preparedness actions you can take to remain safe. A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay in the shade if possible, and check in on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. To reduce risk during outdoor work the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by the heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat Stroke is a life threatening emergency and you should call 9 1 1 immediately.

The other weather threat we are tracking is another round of severe storms possible late this afternoon through the evening.

The heat and humidity will generate plenty of fuel for these storms which will begin to form by mid afternoon north of a Kenansville/Kinston/Washington line.

These storms will progress to the southeast as we go through the late evening hours. As has been the case the last several days, these storms will have lots of lightning, heavy downpours, hail near 1", and the potential for damaging wind gusts.
