HOUSTON, TEXAS - Police say a mother was killed and her two young children were injured after their SUV crashed into a tree. But what made it worse-- witnesses say thieves then stole groceries from the wrecked vehicle while the deceased mother and her kids were still inside.
ABC affiliate KTRK reports a Toyota 4-Runner collided with another car on Fondren Road near Dumfries Drive in southwest Houston, Texas, Wednesday afternoon. The 4-Runner then crashed into a tree.
The woman who was driving the 4-Runner died on impact, police told KTRK. Her 4 and 6-year-old sons were also in the vehicle; they were wearing seat belts but were not in car seats, police said. The two children suffered non life-threatening injuries and were rushed to a hospital, KTRK reports.
But before first responders arrived --while the deceased mother and her two young children were still inside the SUV-- thieves came and stole groceries out of the front seat of the wrecked vehicle, witnesses told police.
Police said the woman had attended her 4-year-old son's graduation ceremony at his elementary school, went to the grocery store, dropped off a friend, and was on her way home when the accident happened.
Police told KTRK they believe the woman was at fault and was not buckled in. Her name has not been released.
At last check, no arrest has been made in the theft.
