NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

A Craven County teen recently got suspended from school. But his parents are not letting him get off easy.

William Henry Cox, Jr. was suspended from New Bern High School because he got into a fight over a girl, his mother, Rhonda Hill, told NewsChannel 12. As a result, the 15-year-old's parents are making him hold a sign near Highways 55 and 43 that reads as follows:

"Hi, my name is William. I don't like staying in school so this is what I'm going to do for a living. So get a good look at me cause [sic] you will see me again in the future with another sign saying, 'I will work for food.'"

Hill said her son must stand along the road and hold the sign from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day until May 10.

“It’s like he doesn't have any respect for authority figures, so I thought it would be nice for him to stand out by the road holding up a sign,” said Hill. "So for the remaining of his time out of school, you’ll see him out here standing by the mailbox every day, rain or shine.”

Hill said she's just tired of her son constantly getting into trouble, so she had to take action. She decided to make her son carry the sign after seeing NewsChannel 12's report of a similar punishment last year.

"I send him to school to get an education,” said Hill. “An education is something that he should want, but he’s showing me that he doesn’t want it. So fine, this is what you want, this is what you’ll do for a living."

The Hills have received both cheers and jeers for their choice of punishment. But the teen’s mother said she’s not doing this for the praise; she's doing it because she wants what's best for her son.

"I’m tired of crying. I’m tired of having to go out to the school and [be] on standby because he don't know how to act in the classroom," said Hill. "I fear he’s going to end up in jail. I’m fearing that someone’s going to knock on my door and say we need you to come identify a body and I don't want that."

“I love him, I love him dearly cause [sic] he’s my baby," Hill continued. "But [at] the rate he’s going, I’m scared."
