CRAVEN COUNTY - A New Bern tattoo artist is helping raise money for a Pamlico County father who was killed.
Deputies said 24-year-old John Paul Zubia was murdered as an argument over a woman turned violent Thursday morning. Authorities said Zubia was shot and beaten at a boat ramp off Lee Landing Road in Reelsboro.
Zubia's mother, Sina Zubia, is not only grieving the murder of her son, but she must also face the fact that she doesn't have enough money to bury him.
Lifelong friend of Zubia, Bradley Ipock, decided to get a tattoo similar to one Zubia had in his memory. However, he also wanted to find a way to help the Zubia family.
Ipock's tattoo artist, Barry Crutchley, offered to donate half the cost of tattoos that are done in Zubia's name to help cover funeral costs.
"I just suggested to him you know if he could get the people in here to get memorial tattoos for the guy that I would give half of it to the guy's mom," Crutchley said.
Those who want a tattoo that helps out the Zubia family must pay and schedule an appointment at Firehouse Tattoo by February 23rd. Crutchley said most of his openings are on Sundays and Mondays. The minimum cost of a tattoo is $40. To have half of the cost of a tattoo go to the Zubia family, customers must ask for Barry Crutchley and say the tattoo is in memory of John Paul Zubia.
Firehouse Tattoo is located at 4151 ML King Jr. Blvd. in New Bern.
People who do not want to get tattoos, but would still like to help can donate money. Crutchley is accepting money at his parlor to help the Zubia family until February 23rd.
Pamlico County deputies have charged 34-year-old Cleveland Caraway with an open count of murder in connection with Zubia's death. If convicted, he faces a maximum punishment of the death penalty.
