Suspect arrested in bar stabbing that critically injures victim

CARTERET COUNTY - A man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing another man numerous times outside a Carteret County bar, critically injuring the victim.

William Hayes Houston, 36, of New Bern Highway in Jacksonville, was taken into custody on Sunday, according to the Carteret County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Houston stabbed 21-year-old Steven Copley, of Hadnot Drive in Pelletier, outside the Cedar Point Tavern at 1121 Cedar Point Blvd. Investigators got the call just before 1 a.m. Sunday.

Copley suffered eight stab wounds, deputies said.  He is listed in critical condition at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

The victim had allegedly gotten into an altercation with Houston, but an exact motive is under investigation, according to deputies.

Houston has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was placed in the Carteret County Jail under a $100,000 bond and was scheduled to have his first court appearance Monday morning.
