Suspect accused of assaulting child arrested in New Mexico

BEAUFORT COUNTY - A Beaufort County man accused of assaulting a child has been arrested in New Mexico.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, 34-year-old William Isaac Whitehurst, of Pinetown, has been charged assault by strangulation and misdemeanor child abuse.

Investigators said they received a report from the Department of Social Services on Nov. 25, 2013 of a child who had been assaulted in a home on Highway 32 in Pinetown.

Whitehurst left the state during the investigation, but was arrested by police in Roswell, N.M., on Feb. 1, according to deputies.
