TRENT WOODS, CRAVEN COUNTY - One group of students at a local elementary school is raising money to head to an international competition.
The Destination Imagination Team at A.H. Bangert Elementary in Trent Woods is working to raise funds for a trip to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Global Finals being held May 21-24 at the University of Tennessee. The team finished in first place at a state tournament on March 29.
The group's leader, Caroline Godwin says, "Our Destination Imagination Team, The Specs, were required to do a number of tasks involving structural engineering, imaginative creativity, dramatic performance, and critical thinking and team problem solving. This rookie team won first place in the state competition—on their first try!"
The team of fourth-graders is the only group in the state, east of Asheville, attending the international competition, which draws over 16,000 people from 45 states, 7 Canadian provinces and 13 countries.
Destination Imagination teams work to teach the creative process to students, from imagination to innovation, and it challenges them on creative problem solving skills.
Godwin says, "Since Friday, April 2 we have raised $6,300," but she adds that they still need over $1,000 to reach their goal.
