A bomb robot has been sent inside Broad Creek Middle School to handle a "suspicious device" found Thursday morning.

Cherry Point's Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team is at the school, located on N.C. 24 in Newport. The crew deployed the bomb robot just after noon Thursday. An SBI bomb squad is heading to the scene as well, according to the Carteret County Sheriff's Office.

But there is still no word on what the device actually is.

Tabbie Nance, the spokesperson for Cateret County Schools, said the object was found inside Broad Creek Middle School some time Thursday morning. A student reported the object to the assistant principal. The Carteret County Sheriff's Office was then called to investigate, Nance said.

Deputies said a bomb dog was "alerted on the device,"  prompting the bomb squads to be called in.

Students were evacuated from Broad Creek Middle School and were taken to Croatan High School, said Nance. Broad Creek students were dismissed at noon from the Croatan High School's gym. They are being taken home on their regular school buses or being picked up by parents.

To pick up students, parents must have proper identification and will be asked to wait in their vehicles in a pick up line, said Nance.

No injuries have been reported.  There is no word on exactly where in the school the object was found.
