Store owner fights off armed robber

PITT COUNTY - Pitt County Sheriff's deputies are investigating an attempted armed robbery at the Purple Haze Internet Cafe, on Charles Boulevard outside Greenville.

Deputies said owner John Bohling was taking the trash out when he saw a man coming toward him. Deputies said the man then started to fumble with something in his pocket. They said Bohling then charged toward the suspect, and then observed the man still fumbling in his clothing. Deputies said that's when Bohling charged the suspect once again. Deputies said at that point the suspect ran away toward a nearby mobile home park.

Deputies said K-9 units were able to trace fresh tire tracks to a vacant lot about two blocks away.

Pattie Williams, who lives on a street behind the café, said she watched as deputies searched the area all night. Williams also said she was even followed home from the store by a deputy. She said the latest attack makes her feel uneasy.

"It was uncomfortable because you can't even come and go in your own neighborhood without being chased by the sheriff's, cause somebody's robbing the café up there, Williams said.

People living near the café; claim that over the last few months, crime has increased in their neighborhood.  None seem to blame the business for the recent nuisance, but all share pride in Bohling's bravery.

"If we keep letting criminals walk in and invade our privacy we won't have any privacy," said Williams.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and wearing all black.

The Purple Haze Internet Cafe was robbed at gunpoint November 7. No arrests have been made in that case.
