Stevenson Automotive Group opens environmentally friendly dealership
George Popajohn with Stevenson Automotive Group in Jacksonville is thinking green.
The car dealership on North Marine Boulevard is the second of its kind in the state -- a dealership that is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified.
"When we were going into this facility, we started looking at things a little more differently," Popajohn said.
The group broke ground in this new building about 18 months ago, keeping the enironment in mind. The building has timed lights that turn on and off with a motion detector to conserve energy. Also, the bathrooms have automatic dryers to reduce paper use.
"One of the things about being paperless, you know you're not giving anything to the trash, to where it goes in the landfills, and helps conserve space there as well," Popajohn said.
He says water conservation is also a priority. There are two 5,000-gallon cisterns that capture rain water and air conditioning condensation. This will help the dealership save about 500,000 gallons of water each year. Water also naturally drains into the wetlands nearby.
The dealership is also built with recyclable glass, aluminum and other environmentally friendly products.
"It's important to be green for the environment, and this is the only planet we have, and it's a way to not abuse our home and to take care of what's important to us and to our community," Popajohn said.
